What an excellent way to start this third edition with great news!

Edito
We are really proud to say that our International Masters have been accredited by the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research (Ministère de l'Enseignement Supérieur et de la Recherche) as National Master's Degree called Diplôme National de Master (DNM). This implies for fall intake 2011.

This distinction is the highest accreditation possible granted by the French State. It confirms the quality of the education delivered (content, professors and research activities) as well as the overall integration of the students within both local and national communities.

Furthermore, the European Higher Education Area started with the Bologna Process guarantees the European Recognition of this Degree.

I would personally like to thank EPITA's staff, professors, students and international network without whom this wouldn't have been achieved.

Even if this news is probably the most important for EPITA, you will discover other exciting news in this edition.

Have a good time reading our June edition,

Yours sincerely,

Research at EPITA

Olena and Cancer Research
EPITA's Research and Development Laboratory, LRDE, has developed a software platform dedicated to image processing called Olena.

LRDE's image processing team has been working for the last three years with different research units (IR4M) located at the Institute of cancerology Gustave Roussy (IGR), a leading European anticancer Centre in Villejuif. The IR4M-teams study the structure and evolution of cancerous tumors using several methods such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), observation of cells under microscopes and experiments with mice. MRI generates functional images: contrast agents are injected in the tumor. The MRI enhances then the circulation and concentration of the agents in the different parts of the tumor according to the time passed since the injection. This helps for instance identify the regions with the highest vascularization and define the best therapeutic solution.

The MRI image of the tumor is first filtered, and then divided into segments

The images generated by microscopes (visualized by a histopathologist) allow the structure of the cancerous cells to be studied. Indeed those color images have a high pixel resolution of about 900 megapixels... which helps in the therapeutic decision making process.

Once the raw data obtained, it needs to be analyzed. This is where the cooperation with LRDE's image processing team starts. The researchers from IR4M already had some tools but with limited range of possibilities and certain tasks could not be automated so far. The LRDE has contributed with solutions for automatic segmentation of the tumor into homogenous regions: in 2D images, 3D images and in 2D+t images (a sequence of 2D images taken at regular intervals). For the 2D+t images, the LRDE has developed a morphologic filter in order to denoise incoming data (extract information from a mixture of data and noise that degrades the quality of the data).

But the challenge was the memory management of such kind of images. In the same time, it was a good occasion to enrich our image processing library Milena with new intelligent structures. Meant for non-computer scientists, these new tools have been integrated into a user-friendly software interface.

New Erasmus Agreements

EPITA is happy to announce that two new bilateral Erasmus agreements have been signed this Spring allowing mobility actions from the next academic semester onwards: Stockholm University is one of the largest universities in Sweden with a highly international atmosphere, and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is a leading engineering research institution in Germany.

Meeting with Future International Partners

Mid May we were happy to meet our partners from the School of Software Engineering from Beijing Jiaotong University (China). EPITA and IONIS group representatives welcomed Prof. Dean Lu Wei, and Ph.D. Vice Dean Weiwei Xing on Kremlin-Bicêtre campus. We could talk about the existing agreement between both institutions (MoU) and about the future actions that need to be put in place in order to initiate an effective cooperation. The objective is to offer programs of academic exchanges for the students as soon as possible. Moreover, we brought up the possibility of the creation of a double degree and also talked about a potential project of foundation of a joint school in China.
To be continued!

Israel Institute of Technology Last month was very productive as we also met Muriel Touaty, Chief Executive Officer of Technion France Association. Indeed, EPITA plans to establish a partnership with the renowned Technion Israel Institute of Technology, in Haifa, Israel. The Technion is one of the leading institutes in the world in the field of technologies and has an international scientific influence. We share a mutual interest for our research activities and teaching programs. EPITA's laboratories presented its projects and works, notably in the field of image processing.
Our future potential agreement would be based on three aspects: exchange of students, teachers and researchers. And we are sure that our collaboration could be very successful!

From the Students and for the Students
Testimonial
Jérémie Bensimon Jérémie Bensimon, EPITA ING2 student, went for a 5-month study abroad period to the Netherlands via the Erasmus exchange program. He speaks about his experience...

"I joined EPITA in 2006 in InfoSup. After 4 years at EPITA, I wanted to have an experience in another school. That is why I decided to do my international experience through an Erasmus mobility. I chose the Netherlands because that's a country I never visited before and the curriculum offered at Hanze University Groningen was a great opportunity for me to improve my skills in IT Management and in English since the whole curriculum is in English."

From the Corporate World
During the spring as students are paying special attention to internships and job hunting two specialists came to share their expertise on both the power of alumni networks and leakage issues for future Security Engineers.

Franck Leleu delivered a conference in which he focused on the importance of networking. Currently consultant at ON X and EPITA Graduate from the class of 1992, Mr. Leleu provided clear tips for students to build an effective network. President of EPITA's Alumni Association, his talk emphasized the importance of actively belonging to such community.

Security Manager at Areva, Sébastien Bombal (EPITA Class of 2004) who provides a unique patronage to the school's Systems, Networks & Security (SRS) Department emphasized that future Security Engineers must incorporate their instincts to the rationale behind problem-solving and be trained exhaustively beyond their acute technical skills on legalities.

Parting Thoughts

This Spring Semester, EPITA had the pleasure to support the creation of its International Students Club. Carlos JAIME is currently pursuing his International Engineering Master at EPITA and presiding the club. Carlos introduces the association for our readership:

"EpiWORLD is an EPITA students association which promotes integration between international students and French students organizing events and social activities together.

The major goal is to bring a great experience when we share our different cultures and lifestyles. We want to make our international members feel more comfortable living in France and have fun within our activities.

As international students, our common language is English, but we encourage each other to practice and learn more French with the French students. We think that within a social environment, we can familiarize better with the language.

So, if you want to be part of EPITA, come with us and enjoy Paris and around in a whole new way with students from around the world!"

What about you? Is there such type of association on your campus?
